Loading zone rules: who can stop and for how long
Updated 27 October 2026
Short answer: A loading zone is for vehicles dropping off or picking up goods. Under the Australian Road Rules you can stay up to 30 minutes unless the sign shows a different limit, and in most states only commercial or goods-carrying vehicles may use it. Outside the times shown, the loading zone rule doesn't apply.
Who can use a loading zone?
That depends on your state. Most states limit loading zones to commercial vehicles such as vans, utes and trucks that are loading or unloading goods. A regular car usually can't use one, even for a quick drop-off. Check your state transport authority's rules if you're unsure.
How long can you stay?
Up to 30 minutes under the Australian Road Rules, unless the sign shows a different time, for example "Loading Zone 15 min".
After hours
Outside the loading zone's hours, follow any other plates on the pole. In the example above, anyone can park for an hour between 6pm and 10pm.
