What does 2P mean on a parking sign?
Updated 27 October 2026
Short answer: 2P means you can park for up to 2 hours. The number before the P is the limit in hours: 1/4P is 15 minutes, 1/2P is 30 minutes, 1P is 1 hour, 2P is 2 hours and 4P is 4 hours. The limit only applies during the hours and days printed on the plate.
Every time limit at a glance
| Sign | You can park for |
|---|---|
| 1/4P | 15 minutes |
| 1/2P | 30 minutes |
| 1P | 1 hour |
| 2P | 2 hours |
| 3P | 3 hours |
| 4P | 4 hours |
Free or paid?
A plain "2P" plate is free, but time-limited. "Ticket 2P" means you pay at a machine or in an app, and the 2-hour limit still applies. "Meter 2P" means you pay at the meter for that space. More on ticket and meter parking.
When the limit applies
Read the hours and days under the P. A plate reading "2P 8am–6pm Mon–Fri" limits you to 2 hours on weekdays between 8am and 6pm. Arrive at 5pm and the limit ends at 6pm. On Saturday this plate doesn't apply at all, but check for other plates on the same pole.
Can I move my car and start again?
Moving to another space nearby doesn't always reset the clock. Many councils treat re-parking in the same street or zone as one continuous stay. If you need longer, find a spot covered by a different sign.
Common questions
Is 2P parking free?
Yes, unless the plate also says Ticket or Meter. Plain 2P is free for up to 2 hours during the times shown.
What does 1/2P mean?
1/2P means you can park for up to 30 minutes.
How do councils know how long I've parked?
Parking officers use chalk marks, photos, licence-plate cameras or in-ground sensors to time how long you've stayed.
Does 2P apply after 6pm?
Only if the plate's hours include it. If the plate reads 8am–6pm, there's no time limit from that plate after 6pm.
